MCA #9, Saturday

Steve had toyed with the idea of going up to New York for the Fourth, or, barring that, just into Washington. But Washington was full of people and in New York, at the Independence Day party Bucky had decided to throw for the Avengers, he knew how it would be. That team was Bucky's, now, but it had once been Steve's. It would be weird. Steve was ninety-two years old today and he wasn't in the mood for dealing with that. So he wasn't. He was staying home and baking his own cake, and maybe later he'd find a fireworks show. It would be a quiet birthday. He was kind of looking forward to it. Plus, not that he didn't love Independence Day or his uniform, but he'd figured out a few years after he'd been thawed that if he baked his own cake he could neatly get around it being red, white, and blue again. This year he was working on a chocolate peanut butter cake. If he didn't just eat the batter first.

((Open to anyone who wants to give the birthday boy best wishes (or get some of that cake), but I'm about to head out for the day, so SP yay!))

It was someone's birthday. Someone who was being a giant baby about certain things, so Tony was just going to have to take the initiative there.

Knock knock, Steve.

"Just a second!" Steve called. He wiped off his hands and turned off the mixer before he went to answer the door. He opened it and froze. "Tony."

"Steve." Tony did the natural thing and pushed past him to get into the apartment. "Have I been here yet?"

"I...don't think so," Steve said, looking around the living room for anything he might not want Tony to see. Luckily, the place was neat as a pin. "Why are you here now?"

"It is your birthday, right?" Tony asked as though speaking to a particularly dim child.

"I wasn't sure you'd remember," Steve said warily.

"I put it in the calender." Well, actually, Jarvis did that.

"Oh. Well." Steve shifted nervously nervously. "Can I help you?"

Tony help up the bottle of champagne in his hand. "You do have glasses, right?"

"Yes," Steve said slowly. "Yes, I do. I even have actual champagne glasses." He wasn't sure how. He was pretty sure he hadn't bought them, since he didn't actually bother drinking most of the time. They'd just sort of appeared. He suspected Natasha.

"Well?" Tony gave him a look like he was waiting for the man to get with the program here.

Steve just stared at him for a moment, then managed to get out, "Are you serious?"

"I'm here, aren't I?"

That was true. Tony was here. "The cake's not ready to frost yet," Steve said, feeling kind of stupid even as he said it.

"I'm sure I can wait for that," Tony assured him, holding out the champagne.

Steve took the champagne and went into the kitchen to find the glasses. "So is this. What. Are we speaking again?"

"You're the one who took off like an affronted prom date," Tony reminded him, wandering to find Steve's entertainment set up.

Steve's entertainment setup was a record player and a whole lot of jazz. He'd left his TV in New York with Bucky and never quite gotten around to getting a new one. He came out of the kitchen, glasses in hand, and said, "That is not what happened."

Tony just shot him a look and made a mental note to get him a TV. This was just... well, pathetic.

"Really?"

"Really," Steve said firmly, and hesitated before offering him a champagne glass.

He knew he shouldn't be party to Tony's drinking, but. Tony was talking to him again.

And Tony was hardly the one he thought he was there.

Really.

"Then what did happen?"

"I'm...not really sure," Steve admitted.

Downing his glass of champagne in one burning swallow, Tony rolled his eyes. "We had sex, Steve. It happens."

Steve really wished he could get drunk. "Yes. I'm aware of that. I was there."
