screwyoumarvelDespite Steve being on high alert even when he slept, the intruder came and went without waking him, as evidenced by the two items sitting on his coffee table when he woke up that hadn't been there when he went to sleep.
The first was a large sheet cake, decorated like the American flag with raspberries and blueberries forming the red stripes and field of stars. Steve assumed there was icing, but couldn't really tell, because the white stripes were occupied by candles. Ninety of them. Sometimes, Nick Fury's sense of humor left something to be desired.
The second was a battered leather artist's portfolio, and he knew what it contained before he picked it up and opened it reverently. His shield. The real deal, he could tell. And he knew the person who'd liberated it would have, as well.
After standing there staring at it for a long moment, he went for his phone to call Fury. "How did you get it?"
"I'm guessing Operation Hill Sisters was a success," Fury replied.
"Operation who?"
"Hill Sisters. They own the rights to 'Happy Birthday.' You can thank our cyborg friend. Not sure how he did it; I haven't heard from him in a week since I suggested he give it to you in person."
If he ignored the ache in his heart that arose every time Bucky ran away, this raised an interesting possibility. "Wait, is the cake from you?"
"What cake?"
"There's a cake. Done up like the flag and it's got ninety candles on it."
Fury chuckled. "I'll be damned. And here I thought the kid didn't have a sense of humor left." And then he hung up on Steve.
With one last brush of his hand across the surface of the shield, Steve went to get dressed. After that was accomplished, he took his cake up to the kitchen to share with his housemates.
He conveniently forgot a lighter.
